Message from the Program Director

Kimberly Williams, MD

Hello!  Welcome to the website of the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency. Smoky Hill is an unopposed community family medicine residency with a focus on training for rural medicine.  For over 30 years, we have proudly produced excellent family physicians to serve the needs of rural Kansas communities.

If there was one word to describe our program it would be community.  The medical community in Salina embraces residents during their 3 years of training. As a community based program, we are fortunate that our residents work with and learn from excellent sub-specialists. Our volunteer faculty understand the skills our residents need to go to rural towns where specialists are not just a short drive down the street. The Salina community offers a broad patient case mix necessary to train competent, confident and caring family physicians who will work on the front lines of the health care system.

The Smoky Hill community is one of family and excellence.  Without a doubt, our biggest strength is the quality of our residents. With eight winners of the AAFP/Bristol Myers Squibb Award, our residents are recognized on a national scale for their accomplishments. As a relatively small group, the residents form a family of smart, hard working, extremely capable family physicians who just happen to also be great people to be around and work with.

The excellent community continues with our core faculty.  They have broad interests and skills and each bring something unique to Smoky Hill.  The faculty have been selected not only for their abilities as family physicians and teachers, but also for their personalities and attributes as mentors and role models.

Our mission of training physicians for rural Kansas has been and will continue to be at the forefront of everything we do.  We know not every rural physician practice is the same. Our curriculum design has all the components every rural family physician needs and then allows flexibility for each individual resident to tailor his/her training. Graduates of our program provide the full spectrum of family medicine, including obstetrics with C-sections, upper and lower endoscopy and other procedures, emergency medicine and inpatient medicine in addition to outpatient clinic
